Words From the Chaplain's Pulpit
When people travel abroad for any length of time for whatever
reason, when they fly back into New York and see the Statue of
Liberty lifting her lamp to greet all those coming into the
United States, it often overwhelms them to the point of tears.
And anyone visiting Philadelphia and viewing the Liberty Bell,
displaying the words, "proclaim liberty throughout all the Land
unto all the inhabitants thereof," are very impressed. Liberty
is the ideal of millions in other countries who want to come
here to experience that blessing with us.
The year of Jubilee in Jewish history
allowed a Hebrew who had
become a slave for economic reasons to be set free. Others could
regain their family land. In English, jubilee is a synonym for
joyful expression.
The greatest jubilee is liberty from penalty, power, and presence
of sin provided for us in Jesus. We need to proclaim this
liberty to all the world. (Excerpts from June Issue of Open
Windows).
And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all
the land unto all inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubilee unto you; and ye shall return
every man unto his family. Leviticus 25:10
